This limited offer is aimed at assisting Pros get up and running quicker with very few obligations.
- A typical Pro who has signed up 10 kids for an 8 lesson group, and has charged our average fee of R900 per kid per module makes R7200 after paying for the learning material and certificates.
- Some Pros who have marketed the programmes well and have gained support from their local schools for example, have signed up 60 kids per module and made in excess of R43 000 per school term.
- The bottom line is that the figures don’t lie and Pros around South Africa are already seeing the benefits of these internationally proven programmes. You have nothing to lose, except an opportunity to grow your numbers.
What’s the secret?
As with any sporting activity, a passion and enthusiasm for all sport is instilled in us from an early age. Our kids are introduced to a variety of sports at their schools and this exposure is usually the catalyst for their longer term involvement or love for any game. Golf is one of the very few sports that tends to attract the bulk of its players at a much later stage, and although this has many benefits as far as longevity is concerned, it is also something that seems to fuel the general lack of grassroots participation and growth. For some reason golf has remained a largely marginalized school sport despite the fact that such a large percentage of adults become addicted. For this reason, we have to ask ourselves whether or not we as golf Pros and Clubs are doing enough to forge meaningful relationships with our surrounding schools to get more kids into the sport at a younger level. We need to start growing our potential base of students from the ground up and not by canvassing the 19th hole after dark.
Martin Briede, the Head Professional at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington, is one of those Pros that has realized this potential and has been actively pursuing schools with a view to building partnerships and growing his student base. Martin is not only the official PGA Pro for St. Johns College in Houghton, but has managed to secure fantastic membership deals for all his students there and offers the school tee times at Royal to encourage them to play. The teachers have even benefited from preferential membership rates. He says that through this kind of partnership, he has been able to grow his business and has introduced many new members to Royal. At the moment Martin coaches 55 kids from St. Johns between the ages of 5 and 15 years and is extremely happy with the structure and content that YMG gives him. He is also able to charge decent coaching rates for his group sessions and keeps the kids for much longer periods. This model has worked so well that he has recently signed up Parktown Boys and is looking at having St. Andrew’s school for girls on his programme in January 2010.
Off the back of this growing success, Martin and his assistant Ryan have taken SNAG, the first touch coaching system, to various Junior schools around Joburg. By doing simple demo lessons during Physical Education periods, they have managed to build an entirely new base of young golfers and get the schools interested and supportive of golf. SNAG can be coached safely in small areas with large groups of kids, which makes it practical, fun and financially beneficial. Recently, a demo day for about 60 kids in grade 0 at St. Dunstans school in Benoni has prompted the school to promote golf and so far yielded over 20 future golfers in less than two weeks of being open as an option to parents. |
